Dear Secret Library Agents,
What a great summer it has been! I have enjoyed writing to you throughout the TD Agent 009 Reading Program.
Now that you have successfully completed your mission, there is one more mystery for you to solve, and that is to try and determine my true identity.
You see, Lady X is just my pen name. I am really someone else.
If you think you might know who I really am, blog your guess in the box provided below along with your name, and you will be entered into a draw for a secret prize. My true identity will be revealed and the prize will be awarded at the Springfield Library on September 1st, 2009.
Good luck Agents!!

Lady X's Message of Thanks
Dear Secret Library Agents,
How smart of you to connect the sounds to the codes that I sent you last week!
At the time, I hadn’t realized that the markings from the window belonged to the Dewey decimal system. I assume by your quick thinking that you must have studied the Dewey decimal system in your first week of Secret Library Agent training at Library Headquarters. No wonder you are such a clever bunch!
It is a relief to know that my library is not haunted or in danger of being robbed. I was really starting to worry! Both my Maid and Butler are feeling much better now and healing from their injuries quite nicely. When I told them how you had discovered where the noises where coming from, they were relieved to know the mystery had been solved once and for all.
I too am sleeping much better these days, knowing that the noises I heard have been coming from inside some of my favourite books. At first it was hard to believe, but I know from your investigation that it’s true. The same books that have taken me to imaginary places and taught me many amazing facts must have been trying to find a way to get my attention.
So the mouse that was squeaking was enjoying the adventures of Stuart Little, and the little girl laughing was my good friend Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables. The wings that were flapping were from a mystical book about dragons of all shapes and sizes, and that frightening roar was just a dinosaur I had read about many times before from the over-sized book on the top shelf. The swords that were clanging were two Knights caught in a duel on page ten, and the strange sort of beeping were three aliens stuck in between the pages of our vast solar system. (I think they may have gotten lost in space!) The book full of sneaky pirates surely caused all that jingling, and another happy fairy tale ending led to the magical tinkling.
As for the dog barking, well who even knew that a little basset hound could be a secret agent too? Agent 009. I hope he finds his bone inside the pages of his book.
I always knew that books could open my mind to experiences in far away places, but I never realized it was possible that they could actually come to life. Do you think anyone will ever believe it? Maybe not at first, but once they have opened a book, they too will understand.
Thanks to your great detective skills, my charitable work is no longer in jeopardy and I can continue on with my charitable efforts to donate my books to the Elgin County Library and to other libraries across Canada. I’m so excited!
How wonderful to think that people of all ages will discover the magic of reading just by owning a library card.
Congratulations on the success of this final mission. Well done Secret Library Agents!
Yours truly,
X-tremely grateful

Lady X's Message of the Week
Dear Secret Library Agents,
Thank you for agreeing to take on my case. Over the past week, the noises in the library have become louder than ever. Even my Maid will not go near the library anymore. She was polishing the floors in the hallway late one afternoon when she heard the strange sounds coming from behind the library doors. It frightened her so much that she stumbled over her cleaning bucket as she turned to run away and broke her foot. She won't be back to work for quite awhile.
My Butler has also refused to go to the library and bring me books that I need throughout the busy day. On his last trip to bring me one of my favourite reads, he said he was suddenly attacked by an army of books from the shelves. He quickly ran from the aisle protecting his head with his hands as several books from the collection just seemed to fly off and fall to the floor by themselves. He ended up with quite a goose egg on his forehead and he is certain that the library is haunted.
With no one else to turn to, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Arming myself with a large candelabra from the hall table, I bravely approached the library doors once more, hoping that I would be able to solve this mystery once and for all.
I slowly opened the library door. The room was still and quiet. The books that had fallen to the floor still lay cluttered in the aisle on top of one another in a scattered mess.
As I carefully stepped over the pile, my eyes gazed towards the large glass window on the west wall of the room. The panes of glass were filled with a collection of codes made up from a combination of letters and numbers. They looked to have been scribbled on the panes of glass by hand. There were nine different codes all together.
Suddenly I realized that I had sent you a list of nine different sounds in my other note and it quickly came to me that perhaps the nine codes in the window might be connected in some way to the sounds. I carefully wrote down all of the codes that I saw and I have mailed them in a large manila envelope to Library Headquarters for your examination.
Then the strangest thing happened. After writing down the strange markings, I looked up and watched as the codes were mysteriously erased from the window one by one. They disappeared, right before my eyes. I backed away from the window, stepped back over the pile of books on the floor, ran out of the library and shut the door.

Another Message from Lady X
Dear Elgin County Secret Library Agents,
I’m sorry it has taken me so long to send you a message. My bazillionaire life has been extremely busy. With so many things to do and so little time to do them in, the weeks have passed quickly, leaving me behind in my duties.
First of all, I must start my letter by telling you my secret. You see, no one really knows who I am. One of the difficult things about being a bazillionaire is that sometimes people want to contact me just because of my wealth. I really don’t have many friends. Just my rare collection of books; they are like my best friends sometimes. Over the years they have become my most treasured possessions.
The noises I wrote to you about earlier have started to fill the quiet nights in my home. I am fearful that there may be someone lurking in the library trying to steal my books. I couldn't bare to loose them, for then I truly would be all alone in the world.
After getting ready for bed the other night after a very busy day, I thought it might helpful to go down to the library and pick out a book to read before going to sleep. Do you like to read before you go to bed? It is one of my very favourite things to do.
After putting on my robe and slippers, I made my way down the long staircase of my mansion, through the grand entry way, down the long corridor that leads to a pair of large wooden doors to the library. As I slowly began to turn the brass knob on the door, I heard the sounds again. Faint at first, they then became louder. I stood very still and pressed my ear to the door to see if I could distinguish them any clearer.
As I listened quietly, I could clearly hear nine different sounds coming from inside the library. I took out a pad of paper and pencil from the pocket of my robe and wrote them down.
This is what I heard:
a mouse squeaking, a girl laughing, wings flapping, a frightening roar, swords clanging, a strange sort of beeping, coins jingling, a magical tinkling, and last but not least, a dog barking.
After scribbling down the last sound, the pencil slipped from my nervous fingers and landed on the marble floor, making a clear, crisp sound as it danced across the floor and then rolled underneath the library door.
All of a sudden, the noises stopped and an eerie silence filled the air. I looked down to see a shadow move slowly from behind the doorway and then saw the pencil roll back towards me until it came to a stop resting against the edge of my slipper.
I carefully bent over to pick it up. Just as I did, the door to the library opened and a low voice called out, "Come in Lady X, we've been waiting for you."
I was so terrified that I turned and ran back up to my room as fast as I could and locked the door.
What do you think it all means? Can you help me solve this mystery? Please take the clues that I have given you back to Library Headquarters and discuss them with the Inspectors. I am in need of your help and don't know what to do.
Sincerely yours,
Lady X
