Dear Elgin County Secret Library Agents,
I’m sorry it has taken me so long to send you a message. My bazillionaire life has been extremely busy. With so many things to do and so little time to do them in, the weeks have passed quickly, leaving me behind in my duties.
First of all, I must start my letter by telling you my secret. You see, no one really knows who I am. One of the difficult things about being a bazillionaire is that sometimes people want to contact me just because of my wealth. I really don’t have many friends. Just my rare collection of books; they are like my best friends sometimes. Over the years they have become my most treasured possessions.
The noises I wrote to you about earlier have started to fill the quiet nights in my home. I am fearful that there may be someone lurking in the library trying to steal my books. I couldn't bare to loose them, for then I truly would be all alone in the world.
After getting ready for bed the other night after a very busy day, I thought it might helpful to go down to the library and pick out a book to read before going to sleep. Do you like to read before you go to bed? It is one of my very favourite things to do.
After putting on my robe and slippers, I made my way down the long staircase of my mansion, through the grand entry way, down the long corridor that leads to a pair of large wooden doors to the library. As I slowly began to turn the brass knob on the door, I heard the sounds again. Faint at first, they then became louder. I stood very still and pressed my ear to the door to see if I could distinguish them any clearer.
As I listened quietly, I could clearly hear nine different sounds coming from inside the library. I took out a pad of paper and pencil from the pocket of my robe and wrote them down.
This is what I heard:
a mouse squeaking, a girl laughing, wings flapping, a frightening roar, swords clanging, a strange sort of beeping, coins jingling, a magical tinkling, and last but not least, a dog barking.
After scribbling down the last sound, the pencil slipped from my nervous fingers and landed on the marble floor, making a clear, crisp sound as it danced across the floor and then rolled underneath the library door.
All of a sudden, the noises stopped and an eerie silence filled the air. I looked down to see a shadow move slowly from behind the doorway and then saw the pencil roll back towards me until it came to a stop resting against the edge of my slipper.
I carefully bent over to pick it up. Just as I did, the door to the library opened and a low voice called out, "Come in Lady X, we've been waiting for you."
I was so terrified that I turned and ran back up to my room as fast as I could and locked the door.
What do you think it all means? Can you help me solve this mystery? Please take the clues that I have given you back to Library Headquarters and discuss them with the Inspectors. I am in need of your help and don't know what to do.
Sincerely yours,
Lady X
